World’s First Flying Machine were a seven-piece band from Champaign-Urbana. They’ve been called “Noise Folk” and “Freak Pop” and “Oddly Instrumented.” Formed in a University of Illinois dormitory in the fall of 2007, lead singer Ben Campbell and guitarist Chris Howaniec were soon followed by Laura Lynch (violin), Kurt Werner (bass, ukulele, bells), Zane Ranney (drums), Brian McGovern (ukulele, mandolin, bells) and Gautam Srikishan (violin). After countless shows, opening for major acts (Headlights, Titus Andronicus, Black Mountain, The Brunettes), hours of studio time with Matt Talbot (formerly of the band Hum) and their first midwest tour, Flying Machine released their debut album, The House You're Living In, on January 30th, 2010. They played their last show on February 12th, 2011 at Urbana's Canopy Club. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
