Self Diagnosis is a rock band formed and based in Tring, UK. They class themselves as "regressive rock" and play in a unique and characteristically diverse style. The band's line up currently consists of Joe Watson on guitars and Dan Kempster on drums. The group was conceived in January 2007, largely by accident. The founding members, Joe Watson and Dan Kempster, initially set out to create a one-off rock opera/radio play called The Archive in late 2006. In January 2007, the decision was made to convert the project into a fully fledged rock opera. At this point the band was unnamed, and consisted of Watson on guitar and Kempster on vocals. By the end of March 2007, The Archive had largely been converted from script to lyrics and required musical input. As the project continued to escalate, it was decided that the band would have to expand. Kempster relinquished vocal duties and took up position as the group's drummer. With a foundation of rhythm and melody established, The Archive began to take shape musically. Interestingly, it was around this time that the band adopted the name Self Diagnosis, previously a pseudonym for one of the pair's many previous projects. In June 2007, with the vast majority of The Archive's content written and composed, the band welcomed James Ashwell as their permanent bass player.
