about

Josep Picanyol (Barcelona, c. 1700 - Madrid, 1757 or after) was a Catalan presbyter, chapel master and composer. Most of the relevant aspects regarding his life are unknown. He was probably born in Barcelona and trained in the Cathedral of Barcelona with Francisco Valls, being appointed as an assistant to the master in 1734.1 2 He replaced Tomàs Milans in the direction of the music chapel of the Palace of the Countess in October 1714 - there he had Josep Masvasí as a disciple. The musicologist Capdepont affirms that later, on March 14, 1726, he took over from maestro Francisco Valls in the Barcelona cathedral. In 1736 he left the chapel of the cathedral in the hands of Josep Pujol to move to Madrid, where, according to Capdepón, he went on to occupy the musical magisterium of the convent of the Descalzas Reales, replacing the Italian Francesco Coradini. However, the musicologist Stevenson gives him as a chapel master of the Carmelite church of Tarazona. It seems that that same year in 1747 it seems that he became a chapel master of the church of Carmen de Tarragona. His date of death is unknown. Capdepón speculates that it was in 1757, the date on which the magisterium of the Royal Barefoot was vacant. Stephenson gives 1769 as the year of death. Neither of the two mentions Picañol's stay in Tarragona. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
