Bonaventura Feliu (Castelló d’Empúries, 1732 – Tarragona, 1797) was a Catalan priest-composer whose career belongs to the same musical generation that produced the later Milà and the early Melcior Juncà, though his style remained more conservative than theirs. Born in Castelló d’Empúries in 1732, Feliu trained in the local ecclesiastical environment, becoming deeply familiar with the disciplined counterpoint and functional clarity expected of cathedral musicians. His early career included service as a singer and composer within the Girona diocese, but his lasting legacy is tied to Tarragona Cathedral, where he joined the musical establishment and contributed to its repertory during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Feliu’s works display a solid technical foundation: balanced textures, careful voice-leading and a preference for liturgical Latin genres rather than the more theatrically inflected villancet tradition flourishing elsewhere in the region. Although overshadowed by the more numerous works of Milà and the later stylistic reach of Juncà, his surviving music offers a valuable snapshot of a transitional generation: composers trained in robust Baroque craft yet composing in a world increasingly shaped by Classical proportion and clarity. He died in Tarragona in 1797, having spent his mature years embedded in the musical life of the cathedral.
