Josep Antoni Martí (Tortosa , Baix Ebre, 1719 - Montserrat , Bages, January 3, 1763), also known as Josep Martí, was a Catalan musician pedagogue and composer. He was the first renovator of the Escola de Montserrat, well-trained in the late Italian Baroque style. Little or nothing is known of his formative years. It is known that, in 1749, he left his job as organist and teacher in the chapel of the church of La Soledad, in Madrid, to become a monk in Montserrat. On August 9, 1753, he professed and was appointed master of the chapel and of the Escolania , tasks which he would continue until his death, at the age of forty-three. Two of his Montserrat disciples would become famous musicians: Anselm Viola and Narcís Casanoves. His musical production is very wide. He composed several masses for four and five voices, a Mass for the dead, a complete Mass for two choirs and an orchestra, a Mass for two voices and instruments (which is preserved in the National Library of Madrid ), two Christmas cantatas for for choir and orchestra, Magnificats, various responsories dedicated to Christmas and the Nativity of the Virgin, for voice and orchestra, six instrumental sonatas, a Stabat Mater and six Lamentations of Holy Week. He had a considerable influence on the Montserrat music school, introducing the Italian style he had known during his stay in Madrid. Echoes of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi have been found in his work, especially in the treatment of voices and melody. User-contribut
