João de Badajoz (or João de Badajós) (fl. 1523/1558) was a Portuguese musician and composer of the Renaissance. There are few biographical data about João de Badajoz. The first reference to the musician can be found in Gil Vicente 's "Auto de Inês Pereira" (1523) ; is a typical mention that this Portuguese playwright often made to well-known personalities at the court: "We spoke to Badajoz / musician, discreet, single, / this one was the real one / but he released us from the nut". Another reference, this one from 1547 and again by a playwright, António de Portalegre gives him as chamber musician of King João III and author of a novel for his auto "Pranto da Senhora on the way to Monte Calvário . The royal office would hold until at least1558 , the year in which it appears in a list of musicians of the same Portuguese king, together with Gonçalo de Baena. João de Badajoz was named by his surname, Badajoz this fact made him proposed by several authors such as the poet "Badajoz" and/or "Badajoz el musician" present in the "Cancionero General" (1511) of Hernando del Castillo and also as the composer "Badajos" present in the Cancioneiro de Palácio . This identification is not unanimous and, in fact, the same could be said of Garci Sánchez de Badajoz , an author whose activity is not known as a composer but as a poet.
