Giovanni Battista Rocchigiani (Orvieto, - Rieti, after 1632) was an Italian composer, anthologist and organist. When his op.3 was published in 1623 he was a musician in the cathedral of Orvieto, but on November 29 of the same year he was appointed organist of the cathedral of Rieti; he was confirmed in this position for five years in 1626 and again in 1631 by three, but there is no record of him after this last date, except the publication of his op.7 in 1632. Most his music seems lost. Of the eight monodies, seven duets and a trio (a dialogue) in op.3, only three monodies, Monteverdi's "Lamento de l'allianna" and Giulio Caccini's "Amarilli", "io mi parto i Occhi soli d 'enamore', have been identified; but the first song, if not others, may be by Rocchigiani, as it is a montage of a poem praising the volume's dedication. Surprisingly, a work as famous as Monteverdi's Lament would have appeared anonymously. Some other pieces, which he composed as a Mass and motets as well as a collection of Arias, Sonetti ed madrigali, from and to 3 voices (Orvieto, 1623).
