about

Giovanni Francesco Marcorelli, or Mercorelli, Mercurelli, Marcorilli, Marco Aureli (Spello , 21 November 1610 - Hörbranz, 31 August 1651), was an Italian composer and organist. He was born in Spello (Perugia), where he was baptized on November 21, 1610. From July 1627 to the summer of 1634 he was organist of the collegiate church of S. Maria in Spello. On 11 May he was appointed choirmaster of the cathedral of Perugia , keeping the post until spring 1639. Later he moved to Rome, where from January 1641 to April 1642 he held the position of organist of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Back in Umbria from May 1644 to September 1645 he was choirmaster in the cathedral of San Rufino. Back in Rome, on 4 April 1646 he was appointed chapel master of the church and oratory of S. Maria in Vallicella , retaining this office until April 1647. Again in Rome on 17 December 1649, on indication of Duke Pietro Altemps, the Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix of S. Marcello commissioned an oratory for the following Lent. He died on August 31, 1651, perhaps during a trip to Germany, in "Horbranto", a place identified with Hörbranz in Austria. He composed the oratories Il deluvio (text by Bartolomeo Conti) and S. Cecilia (text by Domenico Benigni), preserved in Naples (Archive of the Congregation of the Oratory), The Guardian Angel (lost), and the Dialogue of Saint Francis (in Latin), preserved in Bologna (International Museum and Library of Music).
