about

Francisco de Montanos (Valladolid?, c. 1528 - After October 6, 1595) was a Spanish poet, composer, musical theorist and Maestro de capilla. Little is known about the teacher. The little that is known comes from his treatise Arte de Música teórica y práctica (1592), where in two epigrams he insinuates that he came from a wealthy family and in an annotation at the end that he had been a chapel master for 36 years, so in 1551 he already had to be a chapel master. The musicologist Aizpurúa was likely in 1983 that Montanos was from Valladolid. His professional career is somewhat better known. At the beginning of 1562 he obtained the position of master of chapel of the Collegiate Church of Toro, a position he held until the autumn of 1564. That year he moved to the Collegiate Church of Valladolid to occupy from October 24, 1564 the magisterium with the right to a prebenda average, that is, charging the half ration of singer. In Valladolid he performed the usual tasks for the position. From June 1572 he was in charge of a group of 55 adults and infants to whom he gave music lessons two hours a day, with classes open to all those outsiders who visited the Cathedral and wanted to learn. On June 13, 1572, the infants ceased to be under their responsibility. On April 2, 1576, he left office, although he continued his relationship with the Chair, receiving his half ration during the teachings of his successors, until at least 1586. On March 2, 1589, he was paid a six-month replacement
