Mystiki is Big John Bates & the Voodoo Dollz second album. Recoded in Vancouver, BC and released in 2003 it's a rock'n'roll record with exotica and dark cabaret overtones. This album foreshadows the future changes to the Big John Bates sound beginning with Headless Fowl. Mystiki also saw sCare-oline's recording debut. The album was actually recorded twice, once with drummer Kermit McFedries and a second time with Ricardo Calderon. The first sessions saw John acting as the producer but for the second set of sessions he brought Todd Simko on board (Pure, Xavier Rudd). Some highlights were guest appearances by Jesse James from the Spectres and Ana Bon Bon on accordion while Todd also began his tradition of sitting in with the band. And the first of three Braineater album covers, Mystiki, got a lot of "you can't advertise that in our magazine" from the bible belt of America. Either way, songs like Crankenstein and Mystiki were used extensively in movie trailers (like The Devil's Fork) and found their way onto compilation albums around the world.
