Album
The fourth and final album from Big John Bates & the Voodoo Dollz is Bangtown - recorded in 2009 for Germany's Rookie Records. It had all the feel of Vancouver so John continued the tough feel by enlisting ex- Real Mackenzie's drummer J.T. Massacre and loading a house in East Van with gear. The list of players on this release is an A-team including Jimmy Roy (Ray Condo, Big Sandy) on pedal steel on "A Boy Named Sue" and "Whiskey Goblins", Jenn Chycoski (Choir Practice) on organ and vocals, a duet of "Breaking the Law" with Braden McNichol (Cuban Neckties) and Stuart Quayle (Wonderful Diving Horses) even added his drum kit to a few songs. As always Todd Simko played a bit of everything (including pianorgan and marimba). One night after recording the final song - a cocaine-blues number named "A Hard Line" - Todd went back into the studio without mentioning a word and recorded the entire background vocal track - falsetto to baritone. When mixing began John was awestruck by the authenticity Todd added (and by his awesome audacity) and they mixed that into a track featured by Jagermeister in an online campaign.
