Flamethrower was the first album from Big John Bates & the Voodoo Dollz. Recorded in 2001, it was released on a variety of labels world-wide and was the most genre-specific (punk-a-billy) of any Big John Bates album. Flamethrower (originally called Voodoo Bar-B-Q in homage to the Flintstones) was recorded live to 2" tape with virtually no overdubs and mixed at Vancouver's Mushroom Studios by Bates & Wozniack. The songs were all written by Bates except two covers - the Spiderman Theme and the Dead Kennedys' Too Drunk to F*ck. It was recorded by Bates on vocals and guitar, Sandy Matusik on hollowbody bass and Brian Irwin on drums. The song Voodoo BBQ saw the light of day during the online TV series "Grilling Bobby Hicks".
