Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, film producer, and model. She was widely known for her vocal ability and was ranked second on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest singers of all time in 2023. Houston had a significant influence on popular music from the mid-1980s through the early 2000s, particularly in the development of contemporary R&B and pop ballad styles. She was also noted for her crossover appeal and music videos, which contributed to broader representation in mainstream media. Houston began her career as a fashion model and became one of the first Black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen in 1981. At age 19, she signed with Arista Records. Her debut album, "Whitney Houston" (1985), spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and remains the best-selling debut album by a solo artist. Her second album, "Whitney" (1987), topped the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks and made her the first woman to debut at number one on both the US and UK album charts. With her third album, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990), she incorporated a more urban contemporary sound. In 1991, she performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV.
