Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is a American singer, songwriter, record producer, author and actress. She is known for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and frequent use of the whistle register. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her 4th on its list of the greatest singers of all time. Carey rose to prominence with her debut album "Mariah Carey" (1990). She became the first artist whose first five singles reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, beginning with "Vision of Love" and continuing through "Emotions", the title track of her second album "Emotions" (1991). She achieved international commercial success with the albums "Music Box" (1993) and "Daydream" (1995). In the mid-1990s she began incorporating hip hop elements into her music, notably with the remix of "Fantasy" featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard, a direction that continued on the albums "Butterfly" (1997) and "Rainbow" (1999). During the 1990s she recorded a series of US number-one singles and was named Billboard’s Artist of the Decade for that period. After a commercial decline in the early 2000s, she experienced renewed success with the album "The Emancipation of Mimi" (2005).
