Urgehal is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Hønefoss in 1992 by lead guitarist and vocalist Trond Bråthen, known by the stage name Trondr Nefas, and rhythm guitarist Enzifer. Prior to disbanding in 2016, the group released seven full-length albums, four extended plays, and two demos. Urgehal reformed in 2022 as a tribute to past members. Urgehal’s music is influenced by the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s. Guitarist Enzifer has cited the band Darkthrone as a primary influence. The band also draws from other genres such as traditional heavy metal, thrash, speed metal, death metal, and black metal, along with the South American extreme metal scene. The band is known for incorporating visual elements typical of black metal performances, including corpse paint, spiked accessories, and inverted crosses. Enzifer has been noted for wearing a distinctive mask with spikes, which he described as a symbolic representation of personal themes. Urgehal has referred to itself as a Satanic band, using the figure of Satan as a symbolic or metaphorical representation of what they describe as the darker aspects of human nature. The band's name is said to originate from Old Norse mythology, interpreted by the group as referring to a vast, dark forest associated with evil.
