The Very Personal Trainers are an alternative rock band from Millburn, New Jersey consisting of Eric Shepard (vox, rhythm guitar), Michael Matchen (lead guitar), Charlie Marshall (bass) and Rob Goldman (drums). They play some covers, but mostly play original rock songs. The band is very versatile stylistically, and often include a variety of styles, such as funk, metal, punk, and even dub-step in their music. The band came to be when Eric Shepard, a veteran of the North Dakota alternative rock scene, moved to Millburn. He quickly bonded with Michael Matchen and Rob Goldman, an already inseparable pair, over a shared love of music. Eric loved alternative, hardcore, and cabaret-punk. Michael loved funk, blues, and ska. Rob loved electronica, dub-step, and trance music. The trio started writing music together, infusing their vastly different tastes into a sonic melting pot of rock music. The three friends soon discovered a local talent show to premier what they had been working on. Eric and Michael performed an original song, The Lonely Ones, at the Millburn High School Key Club talent show. They performed under the moniker The Very Personal Trainers, and the name stuck. A bassist named Charlie Marshall heard the dynamic duo and the show and was impressed, so he requested to join the VPT. After a series of productive jam sessions, the official line-up of The Very Personal Trainers was established. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; a
