The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. The core line-up consisted of Sting (lead vocals, bass, primary songwriter), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion). Emerging from the British new wave scene, their music combined elements of punk rock, reggae and jazz. The group achieved international success from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Their debut album, "Outlandos d'Amour" (1978), reached number six on the UK Albums Chart and included the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". The second album, "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979), became the first of four consecutive studio albums to reach number one in the United Kingdom and Australia. Its singles "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" both reached number one in the UK. The subsequent albums "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980) and "Ghost in the Machine" (1981) further expanded the band's international profile. Songs such as "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" topped the UK Singles Chart and achieved high chart positions in several other countries. "Zenyatta Mondatta" also marked a significant breakthrough in the United States, reaching number five on the Billboard 200. The band's final studio album, "Synchronicity" (1983), reached number one in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and Italy.
