The GPs were a one-off "supergroup" consisting of singer/songwriter/guitarists Ralph McTell ("Streets of London") and Richard Thompson along with two of Thompson's fellow Fairport Convention alums, bassist Dave Pegg and drummer Dave Mattacks. Of the six gigs the GPs played in their short time together, their live set at Broughton Castle on 14 August 1981 was the only one recorded, but it was not released until ten years later. It consisted of Thompson and McTell originals alongside rock & roll classics like "Great Balls of Fire," oddball covers of country hits ("Together Again," "Honky Tonk Blues"), folk songs ("Pretty Boy Floyd") and one Dylan cover ("Going, Gone, Gone"). The band's name is an abbreviated version of The Grazed Pontiffs, refering to an assassination attempt on the Pope that had taken place earlier that year.
