Nicolas Pfeilsticker (c. 1780 – c. 1820) was a composer associated with the Parisian flageolet tradition bridging the late Classical and early Romantic eras. He is best known today through modern rediscovery of a Concerto in G Major for flageolet, a multi-movement work that opens the album Les Amours d’un Rossignol – Musique pour le flageolet français. This concerto, which showcases the melodic and virtuosic capabilities of the flageolet — a duct-flute instrument popular in salons and chamber settings around 1800 — was brought to light by the research and performance project led by French flageolet specialist and conductor Hugo Reyne. The concerto’s movements display the Italianate galant style transitioning toward early Romantic idioms, and its recording contributes to a broader reevaluation of little-known repertory for the flageolet between the 18th and early 19th centuries.
