"New Winds" was first used as the name of an American trio of avant-garde woodwind musicians. Later it was used by a Portuguese hardcore group. 1) New Winds was an American trio of Ned Rothenberg ((alto saxophone, bass clarinet, shakuhachi, ocarina), Robert Dick (flute, bass flute, piccolo) and JD Parran (clarinet, alto clarinet, soprano saxophone, contra-alto clarinet, alto flute, bamboo flute) who released several albums starting with "The Cliff" in 1986. The musicians are famous for their virtuosity and personal vocabularies of extended techniques. All three musicians have extensive discographies with dozens of other projects. The group functioned as a composer collective, and the music typically included some improvisation. 2) New Winds began in Lisbon 10 years ago as a positive hardcore band. With time and as the line-up changed, the band committed itself to these goals: Human, Animal, and Earth Liberation. Their first release (Around 97) was the 7" "Seeds Of Hope", completely sold-out. They released 2 Cds: The first one, "All Things Are Possible For Those Who Believe", was released around 98 and it is also completely sold out. Back then, the sound was a bit more melodic although the lyrics dealt with the same topics they still speak about at the present date. Around 99-2000 they released the tape "Refusing To Live By Your Lies" which was re-released by Still Holding On from Belgium and then released in South America by the Brazilian Label "78 Life Sudamerica Recordi
