Leonardo Giustinian or Giustiniani (Venice , 1388 - Venice , 1446) was an Italian politician and humanist of the Republic of Venice. He was born into one of the wealthiest Venetian families, a family that, together with other equally powerful ones, held the effective power of the state . Favored by his family position and his brilliant nature as a public man, he embarked on a political career , reaching prestigious positions: he was a member and then head of the Council of Ten , becoming prosecutor of San Marco , or the second position of the state. The Council of Ten was launched in 1310 and became the legal and repressive instrument that the Republic used to bring to light and punish the internal conspiracies of the wealthiest families aspiring to the regency; remained in operation until 1797 . The sudden death of Giustinian, which took place in 1446 , deprived him of his appointment as Doge of Venice . Alongside his purely political passion, Giustinian managed to accompany a strong literary interest, while avoiding any contamination between the two spheres; he came into contact with the most illustrious personalities of Humanism , such as Flavio Biondo and Filelfo . Literature was for him a real enjoyment of the spirit, a sort of refuge "from the daily great fatigue of public shops", a thought that he himself wrote to his friend and humanist teacher Guarino Veronese.
