Juan Martín Ramos

Juan Martín Ramos (Los Corrales, January 6, 1709 - ibid., 1789) was a Spanish composer and chapel master. Juan Martín Ramos spent his entire professional life in the Cathedral of Salamanca, starting in 1721 as a choir boy under the teaching of Antonio de Yanguas. From 1724 he was educated as an organist with Juan Francés de Iribarren (1699-1767), then organist of the Cathedral of Salamanca, who in turn had been a disciple of José de Torres, who later was master of the chapel of the Royal Chapel of Madrid. Over time, Martín succeeded his master Iribarren as the first organist, a time during which he presented himself to the positions of chapel master in the cathedrals of Zamora and Santiago de Compostela without success. Due to the repeated illnesses of Master Yanguas, Martín had to replace him in office on numerous occasions. In 1754, a few months after the death of maestro Yanguas, Martín Ramos won the place by opposition. He did not seek the teaching in other cathedrals again, although at the end of 1754 he was offered the one of Zamora during his participation in the opposition court for the master's degree of the metropolitan. During his teaching, Martín educated Manuel José Doyagüe, who would be his successor in office. He also maintained contact with the court, where he left twice to look for musicians, and with his former master Iribarren, who was in Malaga. Unlike the previous teachers, Martín Ramos did not get the Chair of Music from the University of Salamanca.
