about

Blas Antonio Bosqued, also known in contemporary sources as Blosquet or Bosquet (Jaca, 8 December 1727 – Jaca, 14 November 1799), was a Spanish composer and long-serving maestro de capilla whose career is inseparably linked with the Cathedral of Jaca. Born into a working family, he entered the cathedral’s music chapel as an infante on 16 October 1739, together with his younger brother Gabriel, and received a complete musical and general education within the institution, which provided both training and maintenance for boys of modest background. His early formation took place under the chapel master Joseph Conejos, and already in the 1740s Bosqued is documented not only as a singer but also as a copyist, preserving repertory for chapel use. In 1746, at the age of nineteen, he was promoted to infante mayor, a position carrying increased musical and organisational responsibilities. When the magisterio of the cathedral became vacant in 1750 following the departure of Conejos, the chapter organised competitive examinations in which Bosqued stood against other candidates, including Valero Suárez and Miguel Iribarren. Despite objections lodged by the unsuccessful competitors, Bosqued was appointed maestro de capilla on 14 April 1750. He would hold this post for almost half a century, shaping the musical life of the cathedral through a period of profound stylistic change. Under his direction, the chapel of Jaca gradually moved away from older instrumental forces such as bajoncillos,
