José Gil (de) Palomar (active 18th century – Zaragoza, 23 July 1796), often cited as José Gil de Palomar, was a Spanish organist, composer, and maestro de capilla active in the Archdiocese of Zaragoza during the second half of the eighteenth century. He belongs to the generation of Aragonese cathedral musicians who oversaw the stylistic transition from late Baroque idioms toward the clearer textures and formal balance of the Classical period, while continuing to serve the liturgical and institutional needs of major ecclesiastical centres. Gil Palomar developed his career within the dense musical network of Zaragoza, one of the most important sacred-music centres in eighteenth-century Spain, anchored by La Seo del Salvador and the Basílica del Pilar. As an organist and later maestro de capilla, he was responsible not only for composition but also for the daily musical governance of the chapel: training singers, directing polyphony, and supplying music for both ordinary liturgy and major feasts. His surviving reputation rests on his role as a dependable professional rather than a flamboyant innovator, exemplifying the solid craftsmanship that sustained cathedral music at a high level during a period of aesthetic change.
