Artist
Hildebert de Lavardin (1056–1133) was a French cleric and Latin writer whose career rose from the cathedral schools to the highest ranks of the Church in western France. Born at Lavardin, he became scholaster at Le Mans, then bishop of Le Mans (from 1096) and finally archbishop of Tours (from 1125). Alongside his ecclesiastical duties he built a strong literary reputation: his letters and occasional poems—many cast as moral counsel, praise, or personal request—circulated widely enough to leave a substantial manuscript trail and continue to be excerpted in modern collections.
