Giovanni Domenico Sebenico (Corbolone, 1640 - Corbolone, September 19, 1705) was an Italian composer, organist and tenor who lived under the Republic of Venice. Giovanni Sebenico was born in Corbolone from a family of Dalmatian origin. After studying music under Giovanni Legrenzi in Venice , he was active as assistant chapel master in Cividale del Friuli from 1660 to 1663 and as a tenor singer at the chapel of San Marco in Venice from 29 July 1663 to 1666. 'last year he entered the service of the royal court of Charles II in London , remaining there until the summer of 1673: in the English capital in 1668 he became Master of Italian Music and was active both as a singer and organist. Back in Italyin 1673, he became choirmaster at the Savoyard court of Turin , a position he held until 1690. Subsequently he was in Venice for a couple of years and in 1692 he returned to Cividale, always holding the position he had previously. In his time he was mainly known as a musician and opera composer. Of all his operatic works (consisting of three acts), which were written for Turin, his music seems to have been totally lost. Three sacred works by him were found in 1971 in the chapter archive of Cividale del Friuli. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
