Francisco Manalt (born 1720, died 1764) was a Spanish composer and violinist active primarily in Madrid during the middle of the eighteenth century. He belongs to the generation of Spanish instrumental musicians who consolidated a native violin repertory after the long shadow of Italian influence, absorbing elements of the galant style while maintaining idiomatic traits of Iberian practice. Manalt’s professional life unfolded within the capital’s courtly and urban musical institutions, and he is documented as both a performer and a composer at a time when instrumental music in Spain was gaining increased independence from vocal and theatrical forms. Manalt is best known for his violin sonatas, works that stand among the most significant Spanish contributions to the genre in the mid-eighteenth century. These sonatas combine clear melodic profiles with balanced formal designs and a practical orientation toward skilled performers rather than virtuoso display for its own sake. Stylistically, they reflect the transition from late Baroque rhetoric to early Classical clarity, aligning Manalt with contemporaries who were reshaping instrumental language across Europe while adapting it to local conditions. Beyond chamber music, Manalt also composed theatrical and vocal works, though these have not survived or circulated as widely as his instrumental output. His historical reputation rests largely on the violin sonatas, which continued to be copied, printed, and eventually revived in
