Artist
Emmanuel Gònima (Lleida, 1712 - Girona, 27 February 1792) was a Catalan chapel master and composer. Gónima was possibly a choir boy in the Cathedral of Lleida and trained with Domènec Teixidor. He was in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of the chapel masters Bernat Tria, in the chapel of the Palau de la Comtessa; and Pau Llinàs, from the chapel of the church of Santa Maria del Pi. In 1733 he tried to obtain the position of chapel master of the Cathedral of Vic, but the chapter preferred Josep Bernat. In 1735 he obtained the position of chapel master of the Cathedral of Girona. He held this post until his retirement in 1774. Subsequent to his retirement, however, he continued to participate in the courts of oppositions to the music chapel. Gònima, on a compositional level, focused exclusively on the production of ecclesiastical music. He composed carols, oratorios, sacred dramas and some cantatas. His compositional style is located in the late Baroque, but shows a clear tendency to characteristics of early classicism. These can be especially appreciated in their use of the so-called gallant style. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
