about

Melcior Juncà (Tarragona, 1757 – Mexico City?, post-1796) was one of the most intriguing Catalan musicians of the late eighteenth century, a composer whose career bridged the Mediterranean and the New World, and whose output stands at the cusp between late Baroque expressivity and Classical clarity. Born in Tarragona in 1757, he was educated in the cathedral’s musical institutions and soon distinguished himself both as a singer and instrumentalist. Upon the death of Antoni Milà in 1789, Juncà was appointed maestro de capella of Tarragona Cathedral, where he set about renewing the chapel’s repertory and advancing its stylistic profile. His surviving works from this period reveal a composer highly attuned to the rhetorical sweep of the newer style: flowing melodies, transparent accompaniments, and an increasingly Italianate sensibility. He arrived in Mexico City, where he entered the rich musical world of the Metropolitan Cathedral, producing works that blend his European training with the colour, scale and festal demands of a major New World institution. His compositions—Masses, psalms, villancicos and instrumental pieces—made him a significant contributor to the musical life of Mexico at the very moment when Iberian Classicism was reshaping the colonial soundscape. After 1796 documentation grows sparse, but his name
