Dying Fetus is an American death metal band from Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland, formed in 1991. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, with John Gallagher remaining as the sole original member and primary creative force. The band name was chosen by the members when they were young and was intended to be provocative. Dying Fetus has released nine studio albums to date. The band was founded by John Gallagher (guitar, vocals) and Jason Netherton (bass, vocals), later joined by guitarist/vocalist Nick Speleos and drummer Rob Belton. Early recordings include the demo "Bathe in Entrails" (1993) and the compilation of their first two demos released in 1995. Their debut album, "Purification through Violence" (1996), showcased their developing death metal style and included a cover of Napalm Death's "Scum". Between 1996 and 2000, Dying Fetus gained underground recognition through extensive touring in the US, Canada, and Europe, including appearances at metal festivals and tours with bands such as Kataklysm, Monstrosity, and Deeds of Flesh. Their second album, "Killing on Adrenaline" (1998), was released through Morbid Records in Europe and the band's own label Blunt Force Records in North America. Subsequent releases included the "Grotesque Impalement" EP and their third album, "Destroy the Opposition" (2000), their Relapse Records debut, which featured politically themed lyrics and influenced the development of the deathcore genre.
