Agustín (de) Contreras (Poveda de la Obispalía, baut. February 1678 - Córdoba, December 19, 1754) was a Spanish composer and maestro de capilla. Agustín (de) Contreras was born in Poveda de la Obispalía, a town in the municipality of Altarejos, in the province of Cuenca. He was educated musically as a waiter in the choir of the Cathedral of Sigüenza, where he entered on May 13, 1689 and had Pedro Ventura Enciso as his teacher. In 1695 he obtained a beg to move to Madrid, where he remained until 1706. It is not known what activities he carried out there, but it is known that he maintained close and cordial relations with the musicians of the Real Chapel of Madrid, including his chapel master, Sebastián Durón. These contacts would later help him in the search for musicians for his chapel in Córdoba. In June 1706, the Cabildo of the Cathedral of Córdoba proposed to go to the city to carry out the chapel master test. However, despite the fact that he did not occupy any fixed position in Madrid, Contreras took three and a half months to appear before the Cabildo due to the fighting that was taking place in the Court at that time. After a year and a half of trial, Contreras acceded to the magisterium of Córdoba in March 1708, while being appointed chaplain of the Chapel of Santa Inés.
