The A.V.R.O. Decibels were a Dutch jazz and dance orchestra band set up in 1935 in Hilversum by the Dutch broadcaster A.V.R.O. (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep). The AVRO invited Eddy Meenk previously a trumpeter and vocalist with The Ramblers to lead and select the band members. The first radio broadcast took place on April 30th, 1935 and the final one on February 25th, 1936. The band was comprised of Eddy Meenk (leader, trumpet, vocals), Dick Lambrechts (trombone), Nico de Rooy (piano), Rinus van Zelm (sax, clarinet, vocals) Sem Nijveen (trumpet, viola, vocals), Nap Ploeg (sax), Ab van der Molen (sax), Sem Dasberg (trumpet), Henk Bos (trombone), Maup van Kleef (drums), Frits Reinders (guitar), Dolf Karelsen (piano, arrangements), Joop Diepenbrock (bass), Jan Meyer (sax, clarinet), Leo Borgart (sax, clarinet), Klaas van Beeck (trumpet) and frequently Topy Glerum (vocals). The band played exclusively British and American dance music for their broadcasts and also toured the Netherlands and accumulated a popular fan base. Over the Christmas period of 1935, some of the band's members became involved with two female fans, and after a further incident, the AVRO deemed the band's name too 'morally tainted' for its own reputation. On February 28th, 1936 it was announced that the A.V.R.O. would not be renewing its contract with the A.V.R.O. Decibels and set up the first of 3 replacement bands, the A.V.R.O. Dansorkest to play the exact same repertoire. User-contributed text is ava
