The Rutles is the soundtrack album to the film All You Need Is Cash, a "mockumentary" about the fictional band The Rutles. The original soundtrack and film were released in 1978, with fourteen songs on the original version of the soundtrack. When it was re-released on CD, six additional tracks from the film were added to the running order, bringing the total number of tracks up to twenty. The running order was also somewhat changed for the CD release. Musically, the songs are uncannily accurate, affectionate parodies of British rock band The Beatles. They are so faithful to the Beatles' style that "Cheese and Onions" was included on a bootleg of John Lennon material, and songwriter Neil Innes was sued by the Beatles' publishing company for the resemblances to their music and had to testify that he had not been listening to the Beatles' music when he wrote the songs. Correct track listings for both the LP and CD versions follow. All songs were actually written by Neil Innes, but the fictitious credits are listed after the song titles. LP version: A1.
