"Living in Hope" was written by Neil Innes, but credited to "Barry Wom", John Halsey's character from The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, who performs lead vocals on the song. "Living in Hope" pastiches several songs by The Beatles on which the group's drummer, Ringo Starr, performed lead vocals. In All You Need Is Cash, The Rutles perform the song on a country-inspired show, an obvious take on such shows as Hee Haw. The song opens with a simplistic piano piece decidedly similar to the intro to "Don't Pass Me By"
