Album
"Once" is the fifth studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, released on 7 June 2004 by Spinefarm Records in Finland and by Nuclear Blast in the rest of Europe. It is the fifth and final Nightwish album to feature Tarja Turunen as lead vocalist. The production budget for the album was approximately €250,000, rising to about €1,000,000 when including the associated music videos, making it the most expensive recording produced in Finland at the time. This record was later surpassed by the band’s subsequent album, "Dark Passion Play", which had a production cost exceeding €500,000. As of 2013, "Once" had sold approximately 2.3 million copies worldwide, making it the band’s most commercially successful album to that date. A remastered version of the album was released on 6 August 2021. The album marked a significant development in Nightwish’s sound through its extensive use of orchestral arrangements, including performances by the London Session Orchestra. Band founder and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen later described the recording process as a major creative milestone, noting that the album represented a further expansion of the symphonic elements the band had explored on earlier releases such as "Oceanborn". Holopainen highlighted the orchestral recording sessions as a particularly notable experience, citing "Ghost Love Score" as the first piece performed by the orchestra and describing the process as both unexpected and impactful for the band.
