The song is a tribute to Marc Brueland, who was a near friend and 'soulmate' of Tuomas Holopainen. Marc became a big fan of Nightwish after he heard their version of 'Walking In the Air'. He contacted Tuomas, and told his story about his life and cancer. They met at a concert in Canada in 2003, were Tuomas and the band played and dedicated 'Walking In the Air' to him. A short time after, Marc died of his cancer. Tuomas wrote 'Higher Than Hope' for his memory, who reflects how it is to lose somebody that stands close to you.
