"The 30th" is about a moment of revelation when someone has a life-changing accident. The narrator remembers when they heard about the person being in an ambulance, and how scared they were for them but also how beautiful the person looked. They imagine alternate scenarios, trying to process how just one small change could drastically alter their fate. The song is ultimately a powerful reflection on life, death and the fragility of life.
