The players had some discussion on how to spell "trooper" or "trouper". Depending on which band member you talk to, at which time of the day, the spelling was ultimately finalized as "trooper". The song title seems to have been added in a moment of frustration when the guitarist was explaining the time signature of the piece and the bored vocalist growled, "How about simplifying it a little? This isn't 'stump the trouper', you know."
