It was written by Madonna, Dave Hall, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler, with a sample from Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man". The track was produced by the singer and Hall with additional remixing by Nellee Hooper. It also contains lines from the poem "Voices" by Walt Whitman. "Sanctuary" was originally written by Anne Preven and Scott Cutler of the short-lived 90’s band Ednaswap
