"Needing You" is a dramatic monologue that appears in the middle of the narrative of Firstnighter, told from the perspective of a financial criminal about to be released from prison. The song captures both the maudlin nature of the circumstances with touch of empathy for what, after all, are human feelings related to separation---a key theme of the entire Firstnighter narrative. The music is playfully reminiscent of honky tonk and some of the more emotional expressions in country music.
