Hidden bonus track on the first pressings of her eponymous album Aaliyah Originally, Messed Up was not selected to be on the final version of the album. It wasn’t until Aaliyah caught wind of producer Keybeats and Playa of being inquired about the track by other members of the music industry, seeing that it was going to be scrapped. To keep the song as hers, Aaliyah changed her mind and included the song on the album. On later pressings, Try Again would replace Messed Up as the bonus track on self-titled.
