Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model. She was recognized for her contributions to contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop, earning titles such as the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop". Her awards and nominations include three American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and five Grammy Award nominations. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah first gained public attention at age 10 by appearing on the television show "Star Search" and performing in concert with Gladys Knight. At age 12, she signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who served as her mentor and the primary producer and songwriter for her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" (1994). The album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Its lead single, "Back & Forth", reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Following allegations concerning an illegal marriage with Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records. For her second album, "One in a Million" (1996), Aaliyah collaborated with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott.
