Highways was written in the 1990s by The Innocent Bystanders original keyboard player Kaimi Wenger in the 1990s. He came up with the song while living in Arizona and driving through the desert each day to get to work. What he saw on the commute led him to think about the certainty of nature and the uncertainty of human relationships. Like all of the songs here, it originally lacked the Jessica LaFave's saxophone parts which drive the song.
