Pill Thief was formed in 2007, Portland, Oregon. Members include Joseph Kucinski (vocals/bass), Chris Johns (Drums) and Loren Jackson (guitar). In the winter of 2007, Kucinski and Johns had concluded the recording of a studio project under the moniker Monaural, and was in the midst of a hiatus to promote the album. Noting a growing interest in a live project Johns had begun to focus on the drum kit. During that time he learned that Loren Jackson had since moved from Detroit, Michigan to Portland. Jackson had been a key figure in the Detroit spacerock scene during the mid to late nineties in a band called Transient Waves, and Spectacle previous to that. Monaural having also been founded in Detroit and gaining a common fan base, the two paths crossed. Excited by the reconnection and geographical coincidence Jackson and Johns began playing together anew. After a few successful sessions and a realization of a common aesthetic, the two invited Kucinski into the mix to add depth to the two piece. Kucinski, a Massachusetts transplant, was a local artist also known in songwriting circles around Portland under the name Enfield. Johns having worked with Kucinski before as a vocalist (Monaural) and songwriter knew the collaboration had potential. The three hit it off immediately and began developing a repertoire.
