Valentin Strobel the Elder (c.1577–1640) was a German lutenist and composer from Thuringia, remembered today both for his own lute music and as the father of the later Strasbourg-associated lutenist/composer of the same name, Valentin Strobel (1611-after 1669).. A secure surviving attribution filed specifically under “Strobel the Elder” places him in the early-seventeenth-century printed lute repertory: the Lute Society’s index identifies Galliarda 12 (labelled there “[Earl of Essex Galliard]”) as appearing in Georg Leopold Fuhrmann’s Testudo Gallo-Germanica (1615).
