Václav Gunther Jacob (Guntherus Jacob, OSB) (bapt. 30 September 1685, Gossengrün/Krajková – d. 21 March 1734), known in religion as P. Guntherus Jacob, was a Bohemian Benedictine monk, organist, and composer closely associated with the Břevnov–Broumov Benedictine sphere and, above all, with the Benedictine monastery and church of St Nicholas in Prague’s Old Town. Coming from western Bohemia, he entered the Prague Benedictine milieu as a youth and developed into a prominent regenschori (choirmaster/organist) and a highly regarded composer within this monastic network. His surviving output is substantial for a religious-house composer of the period and is described in modern Czech musicological writing as including roughly around 30 Masses, around 30 offertories, around 40 gradualia, along with requiems, litanies, pastorales, and more dramatically conceived devotional works—especially oratorios and sepolcri. His death on 21 March 1734 is recorded in the Broumov necrology, which explicitly praises him as an “insignis componista,” and modern performance culture in the Broumov region continues to revive works such as his Dialogus valedictorius inter Iesum et Mariam, alongside penitential settings and Tenebrae-related pieces preserved in local and associated archives.
