The Tuva Ensemble was founded by ten khöömei singers on October 15, 1988 in Kyzyl, Tuva. Some of them had previously been members of Sayan, the Tuvan state ensemble for songs and dance, since 1982. The members of the Tuva Ensemble have varied over the years. It was directed by Gennadi Tumat until his death in 1996. Other members include or have included Kongar-ool Ondar, Kaigal-ool Khovalyg (founding member of Huun-Huur-Tu), Anatolii Kuular, Sergei Ondar, Radomir Mongush, Maryam Sat, Stanislav Danmaa, Damba-Dorzhu Sat, Ivan Saryglar, Boris Kherlii.
