Artist
The Austrian pianist Thomas Hlawatsch started to play the piano at the age of five. He began having lessons on the instrument shortly afterwards, continuing his studies at the University of Music in Vienna, with composition as a supplementary subject. His most important teachers were Alexander Jenner in piano and Alfred Uhl in composition. Thomas Hlawatsch is prize-winner of various piano-competitions like the contest for romantic piano-music Viotti-Valsesia 1983, held in Italy and the international Beethoven-competition 1989, held in Vienna. Hlawatsch has performed as a recitalist and as soloist with major orchestras like the Viennese Symphony-orchestra, the Prague Symphony-orchestra, and the Zurich chamber-orchestra in Austria’s most important musical centres and in many other European countries, as well as in Japan and the Republic of China. He is also frequently heard on radio and television. Thomas Hlawatsch is one of the few musicians, whose playing combines greatest sensitivity with optimal instrumental mastery. He boasts a repertoire that extends from the classical to the contemporary; his special interest is the piano-music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Leos Janacek, the latter is recorded at CD (label: Naxos).
