Artist
Nick Stockman (lead vocals, guitar) met Richard Kirkland (bass, vocals) busking on the London Underground in 1986 and with the addition of Andy Shelley (guitar, vocals) and drummer Jeff Brunt became The Wood Children. After recording a BBC Radio 1 session for the Janice Long Show, Paul Wigens replaced Jeff on drums. The wood children made their appearance in late eighties/early nineties in North London. The Wood Children mined the drums, bass, guitar, vocals seam with swagger, their collection of coruscating songs stand the test of time sounding as fresh now as they did back in the day. Too melodic for the burgeoning grunge scene, too noisy to be jangly, too extrovert to be shambling not brash enough to be pop stars, if they’d burst on to the scene a decade and a half later the band could have fit snugly into the Britpop canon between Blur and the Bluetones. Through a single, extended EP, mini-album, full length album and final single, the Woodies as they are known to their fans, clearly decided variety was the spice of life.
