The Welcome Mat were born in Sydney in 1990. The Welcome Mat were a part of the alternative music scene of Sydney in the early 90s. From the opening whistle to "10,000 People With The Same Idea" on their debut CD-EP, 'Fairydust', the guys get you onside and take you for a toe tapping good time. They were the party band for the Converse sneaker set. They were always the comedians, from their street press ads to their onstage banter, but their music never suffered from attempts at cheap laughs. The Welcome Mat (Peter Bennett, Wayne Connolly, Cory Messenger and Leo Mullins) consistently delivered amazingly melodic and catchy pop songs that, for many fans, has them fondly remembered alongside the Lemonheads, Posies, Buffalo Tom and Red Cross as some of the most memorable pop bands of the early 90s. 'Gram' followed two eps, 'Fairydust' and 'Spare', and a seemingly endless stream of T-shirts (was that really Jesus with the pulsating eyes?). The album contains 12 near flawless pop songs, there are harmonies, melodies, hooks, heartbreaks and a cheeky sense of humour that the band members wore as a badge of honour. The rockout of "All Or Nothing", guitars ablaze in fuzzy distortion and Connolly's impassioned vocals is a highlight as is Messenger's "Play Me" with the lyrical standouts "A perfect mat
